<image:title>About - About US</image:title>
<image:caption>Rancho-de-Santos is named after the late Santos R. Vasquez of Victoria, Texas. He loved family and the beauty of the South-Central Texas rural landscape. Oversight of RS falls primarily to Milt and Dora Thomas (daughter of Santos). Milt Thomas (Ph.D.) has life-long agriculture experience and held several prestigious beef cattle breeding positions in land grant universities in Texas, New Mexico, and Colorado/Wyoming. Dora is a Registered Nurse and has a passion for caring for cows and their calves. In brief, Milt and Dora met because of the Texas AgriLife Research community in South-Central Texas. Then beef cattle helped them visit many of the great cattle-producing places in the world (US, Australia, New Zealand, Brazil), but Texas is home. Many family members contribute to life at RS, which include but are not limited to, the families of John and Caitlin Flores and David Vasquez both of Victoria, Texas, and Josh and Crystal Thomas of Colorado. Many within this family are BQA certified, and their help is always appreciated.</image:caption>

<image:caption>We follow recommendations of the Beef Quality Assurance (BQA) program sponsored by National Cattlemen’s Beef Association; therefore, have a strong health and nutrition programs and practice low stress handling strategies. We also breed for the polled phenotype and often used female sexed semen to generate heifers born without dystocia.</image:caption>

<image:caption>We select our sires and dams to provide Hereford and Brahman breed complementarity (i.e., balance of Bos indicus heat tolerance with British Bos taurus growth and carcass). We use maternal selection index information from both breed associations to help choose AI sires and use female sexed semen for calf crops primarily of heifers. We also place great selection emphasis on calving ease, gentle disposition and the polled phenotype.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Sustainable grass and natural resource management We are currently managing rangeland pastures predominated with King Ranch Bluestem grass as well as the many brush species of South-Central Texas. Our management considers stocking rate and forage sustainability in pasture rotation decisions. We are initiating projects to reintroduce native rangeland grasses and seedy plants to improve habitat for deer and quail. Most importantly, we greatly improved the water facilities that benefits both cattle and wildlife.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Milton & Dora Thomas Milt and Dora Thomas met in South-Central Texas in the early to mid-1990s. Since, they engaged with the international beef cattle research community, which includes the translation of genomics into the beef industries in the US and Australia. They combine their expertise in beef cattle and health professions to keep the RS herd in great body condition, healthy, and fertile. The late Dr. Thomas was prideful of his beef cattle research accomplishments and shared his knowledge by teaching livestock genetics, production, and management and participating in extension activities. He spent 25 years in the land grant universities in New Mexico and Colorado and are glad to be engaged in farming and ranching in Texas.</image:caption>

<image:caption>John Ray Flores (BJ) John Ray Flores is part of the team of family members that help care for Rancho-de-Santos. A long-time resident of Victoria, he also participates with family (in-law) farms and ranches in Victoria and Dewitt counties. He covers many areas working in the oil and gas industries yet finds time to make sure all at Ranch-de-Santos is working properly, and the cattle and wildlife are healthy and happy.</image:caption>
